Has society made marijuana into a gateway drug?
There has been much concern about legalizing marijuana usage because it is a gateway drug, leading users into harder drugs. However, I feel this could be wrong. One could look at the
obvious and say alcohol, prescription and tobacco as gateway drugs. It is too easy of an argument to make so lets move onto other arguments.
First off I am speaking only of marijuana and no harder drugs. Medical marijuana has many positive effects that shouldn’t be ignored and too many people pushing other agenda’s are
misrepresenting the facts due to a believe that the ends justify the means. So let’s look at how Society has made marijuana into a gateway drug that has lead users into trying much harder and
addictive drugs.
To begin marijuana has been around a long time and its usage won’t go away, who in College hasn’t tried marijuana. Many individuals whom like marijuana will continue to use it, legal or
not, so let’s at least consider regulating it.
So how has Society turned Marijuana into a Gateway drug, infect doing more harm then good. First off including marijuana as a Schedule I narcotics equivalent to heroin, acid and LSD is
false and misleading. Cocaine is listed as a Schedule II drug and anyone can tell you that cocaine is much worse then Marijuana.
Society mislabeling Marijuana has pushed it underground and makes users buy from the some of the most seedy of characters. Individuals whom sell drugs won’t just stop at marijuana so
Society is forcing marijuana users into a less then favorable environment where people will be pushed into trying much harsher drugs, which should be illegal. If society would reschedule
marijuana as alcohol is then society can regulate and control it.
Another way in which society made Marijuana into a Gateway drug is by social psychology. Society cries that the end will come if you try marijuana are false and misleading. Thus
undermining society’s credibility. And thus can lead users to think that Society has over-reacted to other much harder drugs. Users may try harder drugs with the thoughts if Society
overreacted to marijuana then they have overreacted to other harsher drugs.
I’ll use a hypothetical example to convey this point. In my hypothetical example lets say that the flame of the stove is not and a child will not get burned if he touched it. So,
lets say you tell you child not to touch the flame because he will get burned, your child touches the flame and doesn’t get burned. You as the parent will loose all credibility in the eyes of
your child. In a somewhat similar manner this is what is happening with marijuana. People have to overcome society’s psychology pressures if they are going to try marijuana to begin with.
And if an individual tries marijuana what will they then think about Society’s credibility about drugs.
Marijuana has many useful medical purposes for individuals. Sure people will take advantage of medical for recreational use but that responsibility should be placed where is belongs, upon
the individual. In moderation marijuana isn’t any worse then Alcohol, smoking or gambling which can lead into excess. Society should consider speaking about excess more then usage of
marijuana. Who in their right mind thinks beer bongs, drinking a beer in seconds and usually more then just one, are good for an individual yet they are socially accepted., just go to any
college campus.
Perhaps Society may want to re-evaluate the classification of marijuana and consider the evils of excess. It is one of the seven deadly sins.
Well thought out Don, we agree. Below is the Drug Schedules from the DOJ website

Some people are predisposition that if something is legal it is ok and vice versa. Rules as well as laws are made to be adaptable. So that with time as
society changes so may the laws. The US Constitution is a perfect example of this. There are many reasons as to why people will wait until something is legal before accepting it. However,
just because something is legal doesn’t make it right. All one has to do is to look at State Lotteries.
States have been making millions off lotteries with advertising campaigns such as “Winners have more fun”, but at what expense. The likelihood of winning the Mega Millions Jackpot is 1 in
258,890,850. People might as well be throwing their money away. But because Lotteries are legal many people view it as being ok. Medical marijuana has many positive effects for
people, which no drugs on the market today can accomplish. Either as well or without the side effects as medical marijuana can. Yet for many people medical marijuana remains a taboo because it
is illegal. Perhaps as more States legalize medical marijuana, the taboo associated with it will dissipate.

The best option for me during chemotherapy was marijuana. I would recommend anyone having chemotherapy to look into
it.
